"Oh Yeah? My Dad can beat up your Dad!” Pennsic XLII
Please share this with Knowne World lists for those likely to attend Pennsic.

On the middle Saturday, 27 July from 1 to 3 pm, at the Pennsic War XLII there will be an Armoured Combat Tournament for Dads held on the Red List. The Kingdom of Ealdormere with the gracious patronage of His Royal Majesty Trumbrand the Wanderer, King of Ealdormere, is sponsoring this tournament.

This is a tournament for Dads inspired by their child(ren) to earn renown upon the field. This will be a Round Robin Tournament, but if many gentles show up then it will be a double elimination format.

Requirements: All Dads (combatants) must be presented to the list table by their child(ren) under the age of 16 (combat age at Pennsic) to participate. Children do not need to remain for the tournament but it is encouraged. This tournament is open to all Dads who wish to participate. There are no restrictions in terms of rank (Kings and Princes may fight), weapons form or appearance.

At least two prizes will be given: overall winner (Best Dad) and best presentation (Prettiest Dad). This can mean more than just armour, it can include how your entourage presents themselves, etc. It is how you impress the crowd.

The Tourney is being organized by Baron Richard Larmer, if you have any questions please seek him out in the De Taahe encampment in W02. If before Land grab weekend his Excellency can be reached at alowry2002@yahoo.com.

Please share this with Knowne World lists for those who are likely to attend Pennsic.

5:14 pm - Beast & Boar mugs

esprix
Needless to say, Pennsic was once again a homecoming worth remembering. This was my 22nd consecutive, and I haven't had a bad one yet.

One minor note - I lost my Beast & Boar mug this year. Anyone have one they're willing to part with? I've got quite a collection now.

I'm also looking for the first, glass ones, if anyone has one of those as well.

Hope everyone had as good a War as I did. :)

I just wanted to make an update. Hedgie, the official mascot of the Tulstin Troubadours, who went missing on the last day of Pennsic 2011, has finally made his way back home! Many thanks to Ken of the Lost for finding him and sending him back!

10:22 pm - Known World Scribes Get Together

baronessekat
"Hi, My name's Ekat and I"m a scribe. It all started 14 years ago. I experimented with blanks. It was just something to do from time to time. But before I knew it, the Signet pushed an assignment on me. Then multiple assignments. I couldn't go a Reign without doing at least one. Then it was a month.

Then I went from the gateway of watercolors and bristol board to period pigments and vellum.
Now *sob* I'm the one pushing assignments. I used to think I could stop anytime I wanted to. But I realize now that I"m just too far gone."

Does this sound like you or someone you know? Come to the Knowne World Scribes Get-Together in Æthelmearc Royal on Monday August 6th from 3pm-5pm and meet others like you.

The scroll you save, could be your own.

12:13 pm - Need help dealing with low water pressure on the 'ghetti

alphaggek
We camp on the 'ghetti, on N03, right on the corner of St. Lawrence and Sedalia's Way. This year, the water pressure from the water spigot was lowest I've seen it in a number of years. Frequently, it would drop so low that the on-demand water heater would cut out (an Eccotemp L5 for those who are curious). I've adjusted the water regulator as much as possible so it would work on lower than factory normal pressure, but I can't take it any lower.

Has anybody come up with a way to boost the water pressure that works?

Thanks!

Seeking Volunteers and/or Sponsors for the Known World Children's Fete

Greetings! (please feel free to cross post this missive)

We are seeking the help of volunteers with this years Known World Children's Fete at Pennsic. The Fete will be on August 11, 2010 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm at the Barn. Can you sing a song, dance a jig, paint a face, smile and laugh a lot, color a picture, have fun or any sort of other activities? Then we could use you.

We are truly in need of individuals or groups that can offer their time to run and/or sponsor activities (arts and crafts, games, dancing, supplies, prizes, etc.). Some of the popular activities are:
  • Face painting
  • Foam sword play
  • Storytellers
  • Jugglers
  • Puppeteers
Last year, the then king of Caid helped for the entire Fete where his armor and his crown - the kids loved the chance to "fight" a "real king."  I would love for the kids to be able to have similar experiences this year to help add to their memory of Pennsic 40, as they are able to "fight" a knight, a fighter, or a royal peer in their armor (or parred down armor)

We are also looking for volunteers to:
  • Assist with the sign-in for the children.
  • Persons to help endure the other volunteers are getting water and other refreshments
  • Fete security to ensure registration/sign-in and safety.
  • Assistance with set-up and/or break-down.  Set-up is at 12:00 p.m. AND break-down is at 4:00 p.m.
You do not have to be there for the entire 3 hours... but any help you may offer would be greatly appreciated. Last year we had approx. 440 children in attendance, and we may see many more this year! The Fete is great fun. If you want action and excitement, this is the place for you!

Please continue to encourage and promote participation in the Children's Fete! If you will be at Pennsic, but you had not previously volunteered with the Children's Fete this year, we are asking you to please reconsider.

Thank you for your time, effort and consideration in this matter and the fete as a whole!

10:39 pm - The truck stop notices us!

dr_zrfq
Not that this is much of a surprise, but Pilot/Flying J Challenge Magazine has posted an article about Pennsic. Store #81 is located on US-422 just off the interchange with I-79, and reports that their business really spikes upward during a certain two weeks of the year. Who'd'a thunk it!?!? :-)

2:11 pm - Toddler at Pennsic - suggestions? tips?

oushi

Leaving our 1.5 yo at camp grandma isn't an option, so I'm looking for tips or tricks to making the two weeks more enjoyable?  This'll be my 16 war, so I'm experienced with all the usual camping hardships, but not with a toddler.  She wasn't mobile last year, but is VERY mobile this year!  She's not quite at the stage where she'll obey me yelling "stop" or "come back" so I'm worried I'm going to spend the entire time chasing her to keep her close to me.  Leash?  massive fort of baby gates?  what works for you?

Also - anyone wanna playdate?  We're on e18 but she loves to walk so we can come to you, especially if you have an enclosed-ish baby safe area.

Thanks!

12:52 pm - How To Pretend You're At Pennsic

esprix

Several friends are bemoaning the fact that they can't attend Pennsic this year, so I thought it might be ever so helpful for them if we were to come up with a list of ways they can pretend they're there, right from their own home. I'll start:

  • Set a timer so that a CD of clanking armor and chatty coffee conversation goes off right next to your pillow starting at 6:00 a.m. If possible, have it get progressively louder until you can't take it anymore and get out of bed.
  • Do not go directly to your bathroom - go outside and walk around your house 6 times first. DO NOT FLUSH. Also, do not use any running water (you only get to do that once a day), and under NO circumstances use HOT water.
  • You may use your shower, but put a fine layer of mud and stones in it first. (Again, NO HOT WATER.)

What would you add? :)

(I realize this has been done before here and elsewhere, but I thought it would be fun to hear what everyone would add to the list, especially since there are quite a few people here who have posted that they'll be attending Pennsic for the first time this year, and they might want to hear what others have to say!)

10:18 pm - "Oh Yeah! My Dad can beat up your Dad!" Pennsic Tourney Friday 5 August 4 pm

larmer
To all Fathers of the Known World I beg you read this missive and if your travels and commitments allow to attend this tourney in honour of Fatherhood. Please share this missive with your friends and any other SCA lists that you participate in.

YIS,

Baron Richard Larmer

Inspired to feats of arms by his Daughter L'lyn, five years of age.

After a one year break the Kingdom of Ealdormere presents the 2nd Annual Pennsic Tournament:

Oh Yeah! My Dad can beat up your Dad!

On Friday, August 5th (Set-up week) in the white and blue lists.

This an individual tournament for Dads to be inspired by their child(ren) to earn renown upon the field.
Most likely this will be a Round Robin Tournament but it many gentles show up then it will be a double elimination format.

Requirements: All Dads (combatants) must be presented to the list table by their child(ren) under the age of 16 (combat age at Pennsic) to participate. Children do not need to remain for the tournament but it is encouraged. This tournament is open to all Fathers who wish to participate. There are no restrictions in terms of rank (Kings and Princes may fight), weapons form or appearance. At least two prizes will be given: overall winner and best presentation.

4:32 pm - Information about Heralds Point at Pennsic

mariedeblois

Heralds Point will be open the same hours as last year:

  • Wednesday and Thursday of Peace Week from 1-5pm
  • Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Mid-Weekend from 11am - 5pm
  • Monday of War Week from 2pm - 8pm (our version of midnight madness?)
  • Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of War Week from 11am - 5pm
  • Friday of War Week from 11am - 5pm for submission pickup only, no new consultations

If you are in need of heraldic consultation for names, devices, badges, order names, household names, or just some heraldic nerdery, come on by Heralds Point. If you need help with a submission for a branch, household name, or a submission authentic for an uncommon culture, we do ask that you come by early during War to make an appointment with a specialist.

Of course, to handle that "eXtra Large" volume of submitters ...we need heralds and many other kinds of helpers.Collapse )

.... but wait, there's more! We'll be hosting three special events this year:

  • The Known World Heralds Party will be Sunday, August 7th from 8pm to 10pm (or whenever people wind down). There will be snacks and heralds - what more could you want?
  • The Laurel Road Show will be Monday, August 8th from 9am to Noon. Come see hot, live, heraldic decisions being made!
  • The Heraldic Rules Roundtable will be Wednesday, August 10th from 9am to 11am. Come listen to Palimpsest Herald natter on about the impending changes to the Rules for Submission. Feedback and opinions welcome, no heraldic experience needful. There will be a second Roundtable on this topic over in the A&S Tents for those who find mornings abhorrent.

We hope you'll come volunteer your time and knowledge OR utilize our knowledge for your heraldic gain (or both). For one thing ... we told Morale that we'll need more freezy pops this year - they get mad if we're wrong, so please help out!

1:09 pm - Pennsic XL!

luscious_purple
LAST DAY to PRE-REGISTER!!!

Now that I've got your attention ... has anyone heard how the pre-registration is going for this year's Pennsic 40? Is this truly going to be an "XL"-sized war because of the round number, or is the stagnant economy (gasoline prices, etc.) going to keep the increase in attendance down to a minor blip?

I already know a few people who are not going to Pennsic 40 for various reasons -- lack of paid leave time, no job, desire to travel somewhere else for a change, etc. So I'm just wondering whether the notion that "Pennsics ending in 5 or 0 are always really big" is going to hold up this time around.

10:23 am - Pennsic Podcasts - Clan Blue Feather

esprix

I was delighted to sit down last Pennsic and do an interview for the Pennsic Independent Podcasts about Clan Blue Feather. It was just posted today:

http://www.pennsicindependentpodcast.com/e021-blue-feather

I tried my best to talk about who we are, what we do, our history, etc., and I hope I did a good job on behalf of the Clan. If you're interested in a primer about the Clan, you might enjoy listening (and really, all the podcasts are quite entertaining - I do recommend them).
